Using AI to make care more human, not less
Limbic exists because we believe that, in the right hands, AI can enhance humanity in healthcare.
By interacting directly with patients, reaching underserved populations, and performing much of the heavy lifting for mental health providers, Limbic’s clinical AI frees therapists to focus more time on the fundamentally human aspects of mental healthcare.
Meet the Limbic Layer
The Limbic Layer is the proprietary technology behind everything we do at Limbic. Our team of 10 PhDs across machine learning, psychology, AI, and medicine spent years developing an evidence-based tool so safe and secure, it earned us the first ever Class IIa medical device certification for a mental health AI.
The Limbic Layer is our clinical brain—a proprietary AI that sits between the user (patients and clinicians) and the large language model (LLM) conversational interface to ensure safety and clinical precision in every interaction.

Safe
The Limbic Layer uses clinical best practices to process every user input before deciding how to proceed—for example, referring a seemingly at-risk patient to a human rather than letting the LLM respond.
Similarly, it screens every LLM response to make sure it is safe, clinically valid, and aligned with medical device regulations.
Effective
The Limbic Layer includes probabilistic machine learning models trained on massive sets of domain-specific data. This allows for unprecedented performance—oftentimes better than human experts for diagnostic accuracy.
In fact, on average, patients assessed through Limbic achieve symptom reduction faster than those assessed via standard means.
Reliable
As the clinical brain, the Limbic Layer combines the user input with additional clinically relevant information and clear instructions for the LLM. This renders the LLM interaction highly constrained and predictable while still ensuring a great conversational experience.
Through this constraint, the LLM responses become extremely reliable. Moreover, it is possible in the output checks to ensure the LLM followed the instructions of the Limbic Layer, to further increase confidence in the system.
What is clinical AI?
We believe that the phrase “clinical AI,” like the word “organic” for food, should indicate adherence to scientific principles, rigorous safety testing, third-party validation, and regulatory compliance. It’s not simply AI used in a clinical setting. Clinical AI means:
Robust and ongoing scientific research
In addition to our peer-reviewed studies, our work has been cited more than 8,500 times within the scientific community. We’re leading the way here.
Third-party validation
HIPAA, GDPR, ISO, UKCA—the list of our third-party validations is too long to detail here, and it’s still growing. You shouldn’t take anyone’s word for it when they say they prioritize privacy, safety, and science. With Limbic, you don’t have to.
Rigorous safety
testing
Before launching any feature, we evaluate it with our gold-standard testing process, evaluating safety and reliability across tens of thousands of interactions.
Regulatory
compliance
Limbic have pioneered the inclusion of AI in clinical settings—from algorithm training to safety testing to performance validation. It’s no accident that we’re the first company to have an AI clinical decision support tool regulated in the UK for adult mental health services.
